Getty Images and Shutterstock to Merge
In a significant move, Getty Images and Shutterstock came to an agreement to merge. Getty will take the lead with a 55% ownership and Craig Peters will be CEO of the combined companies. Hennessy will join the new Board.
- the merger is valued at $3.7 billion
- with combined revenue of nearly $2 billion
During an investors call, Peters said that Getty Images was built on a foundation of exclusive content and that Shutterstock had built a business with a “wider variety of assets" and smaller business clients." Peters commented that they were also happy to have Envato as part of the deal. The leaders (Peters and Hennessy) replied to a question about generative AI by saying that they are not seeing it take away business and that generative AI content may actually expand the traditional business.

DMLA Launches AI & Copyright Working Group
As artificial intelligence continues to transform the digital media landscape, DMLA is taking a proactive step by establishing an ongoing AI & Copyright Working Group. The group's first major initiative will be drafting DMLA's official position statement on AI, which will guide our advocacy efforts and provide clarity to members and stakeholders on this critical issue.
We're seeking members with expertise in copyright, licensing, technology, and legal frameworks to help shape the future of AI in our industry. This working group will serve as a vital forum for addressing emerging AI-related challenges, developing best practices, and providing strategic guidance to DMLA and its members.
If you're passionate about the intersection of AI and copyright in digital media licensing, we invite you to join us. To volunteer or learn more, please contact Joe Naylor at president@dmla.org by January 31, 2025.
Together, we can ensure DMLA remains at the forefront of ethical and sustainable practices in our evolving industry.
