Announcing the 2021 Digital Media Licensing Conference

DMLA just turned 70, and we’re ready to celebrate!

The 26th International Digital Media Licensing Conference will take place Oct. 25-29, with education online and (pandemic permitting) a day of in-person networking to wrap up the week.

The theme for this year’s event – Bigger. Better. Stronger. The Journey Forward – emerged from members’ shared optimism and enthusiasm after weathering such a rough year.

Here’s what we have planned:

  • Four days of panels and roundtables online like last year, but with intermissions between sessions.

  • More opportunities to talk to sponsors, speakers and friends through enhanced online networking. (We have learned a lot since last year.)

  • A day for regional in-person networking events on the east and west US coasts (and perhaps in between). We must stay nimble about those plans, of course, but will keep you fully informed.

We have a few more details to work out before opening registration, but watch for that announcement soon. In the meantime, send any questions or ideas for sessions to admin@digitalmedialicensing.org.

DMLA Info+ Webinar: NFTs 101

Curious about non-fungible tokens and whether they can benefit your business? Join three members and friends of DMLA who dove into that arena before the rest of us could even spell NFTs:

Joe Naylor - President / CEO / Co-founder of ImageRights International, will moderate the discussion.

Sarah Conley Odenkirk - Partner at Cowan, DeBaets, Abrahams & Sheppard LLP, will consider the legal aspects of creating, deploying and selling NFTs.

Eric Wengrowski - Co-founder and CEO of steg.ai, will delve into the technology behind them and showcase several start ups for whom NFTs are integral business components.

Bring your questions and be ready to measure the impact of NFTs on the industry, your company and beyond.

Date: June 18, 2021

Time: 1 - 2 pm EDT

Cost: Free for DMLA members, $59.99 for non-members

Networking

Introducing a valuable member benefit: DMLA Connect+ Networks

The DMLA Licensing Network has launched as the first of several DMLA Connect+ Networks, designed to provide private space for members to ask questions, post ideas, get input, and generally discuss topics of shared interest with other members.

Led by DMLA’s first Networking Committee Chair, Joe Naylor (ImageRights), DMLA Connect+ Networks will operate on LinkedIn, providing the organization’s premiere confidential, members-only experience.

“It seemed fitting to start with the DMLA Licensing Network,” Joe said. “But we will launch several soon on a variety of industry topics, including: Stills, Footage, Editorial, Creative, Legal & Advocacy, Technology, the Google Licensable Badge and the Content Authenticity Initiative.”

“As these grow, Networks can provide an entirely new level of connectivity among DMLA members.”

Any member may request to launch a Network on any relevant industry topic (camera equipment, for example). Once approved and listed, DMLA will notify members of its existence via LinkedIn and in Newsbreak.

To join the DMLA Licensing Network, follow the link or search for the network on LinkedIn, then request to join. A network administrator will approve members in good standing.

To help ensure the best experience and value for all participants, the DMLA Legal Committee collaborated with the launch team to create an easy-to-digest Code of Conduct. Please read the code prior to participating in any of the DMLA Networks.

Have any questions or a network you wish to launch? Contact Joe Naylor or Elaine Vitt.

VisualSteam Announces the Results of its 8th Annual Survey of Creative Pros: Visual Content

VisualSteam’s annual survey offers 45 pages of insights on content, licensing, uses, purchase factors and more. It also includes a list of the top-of-mind, favorite resources and first-stop, go-to providers for creative pros.

The survey is sent to more than 25,000 creative pros, including creative directors, art directors, publishes, photo editors, graphic designers and marketing professionals.

Here is a sample of this year’s insights:

  • “Free” content soars as four of the top 10 favorite destinations behind Getty Images and Shutterstock provide CC0 content

  • As the quantity of visual assets needed increases exponentially (for images, video, illustrations) budgets are expected to remain flat, putting increased pressure on price.

  • Creative professionals say the number of images needed to support digital marketing, social media and online publishing is skyrocketing.
