Remember the KIRL?

Known Image Restrictions List

First, DMLA wants to thank member Smartframe for hosting the code that delivered the KIRL (known image restrictions list) for members on our old site.

Some members have noticed that the list was not transferred over to the new website (dmla.org). After looking at options and speaking with member companies, the Board decided it would be more effective to share the known image restrictions lists that several of our member companies provide and maintain. We have created a page with these links as well as some additional links that may be helpful.

These links may now be found here. If you have a KIRL or know of other resources, please reach out.

Letter to the U.S. Copyright Office

Did you know that DMLA is a member of The Coalition of Visual Artists? We are, and we work with the coalition on issues facing the industry and that impact our members. We hope to begin to share more of our work with partner organizations.

DMLA recently contributed to The Coalition of Visual Artists letter to the U.S. Copyright Office expressing the need for a group registration option that allows for a larger number of works, and accommodates both published and unpublished works.

We recommend changes to the proposed rule, including a higher limit on the number of works that can be included in a group registration and the implementation of a tiered fee structure or subscription plan. The letter also discusses the challenges visual artists face in the current system and urges the Copyright Office to prioritize their needs and continue modernization efforts. Additionally, the letter mentions a survey conducted by the coalition, where artists expressed that any group registration option for fewer than 50 works is unacceptable, and permitting 100 works would be the most acceptable option for the majority of artists. The letter recommends creating a category for 100 works, both unpublished and published, with an annual subscription model and a special category for artists to register their legacy of works limited to 500.
